About Us
How DIG Started
When Dave Shields bought his sewing machine in 2020, he wasn't planning on starting a business, he just wanted to make the gear he couldn't find on the market. He is, and always has been, a DIY kinda guy, so the sewing machine was another tool. Sewing is still a hobby for him, but after years of making his own gear, fixing zippers, and custom projects for his community, he's pretty good at it. Helps that he doesn't sleep much.
Desert Island Gear was chosen for the name as a nod to Shields' daughter, Mesa. Standing above the surrounding valley, a mesa looks like an island in the desert.
Who We Are
DIG is growing from a garage to its own facility. We are a team of passionate hunters, hikers, bikers, wheelers, fishers, skiers, and engineers turning our attention to textile products designed for the extremes. We've broken a lot of gear and learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Whatever we make, it doesn't go out the door to you unless we would take it through hell too.
Made in the USA
We engineer, build, prototype, and test our products right here in Northern Utah. Some of our raw materials may not be Made in USA, but they will be well-marked on their product page. We're committed to doing it right and doing it here. Your purchase supports local businesses and helps us invest in our community.
What's Next...
The next chapter in the DIG story is happening now. With the Rowan Holster, we are using our experience and passion for wilderness to develop products that make it easier to get lost and do it safely. We've got some new ideas in the pipeline, so subscribe to our email list if you want to stay informed!
